Doubling up for image quality

A new Android smartphone developed by Motorola Mobility, a division of Lenovo, the Moto X4 has a long going it, not least the smarter and good quality camera. It looks sleek too, coming in a choice of Sterling Blue and Super Black. I tested the Super Black and loved the look of its curved corners and back cover. The back has the lenses of the two cameras sticking out a little, rather like the lens barrel of a compact camera.
Moto X4 is tough too with an anodised aluminium frame and Corning Gorilla Glass panes protecting front and back with. Moreover, the smartphone is water resistant, conforming to IP68 rating. This allows you to run or cycle in the rain without worrying.

Although Moto X4 is not powered by the flagship Qualcomm processor, performance is still fast. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 2.2 GHz octacore processor and it has 4 gigabytes of working memory or RAM and 64 GB of internal storage that is expandable with a microSD card by up to 2 terabytes.

With this octacore processor and a lot of memory, the Moto X4 gives you all the performance you need to watch videos and play games free from annoying stutters. It runs on pure Android 7.1.1 operating system without third-party user interface on top of it that may slow it down.
The Moto X4 comes with 5.2inch Full HD 1080p IPS display with pixel depth of 424 ppi. This resolution makes the display good for watching HD clips and for viewing high-resolution photos.

Report: Samsung’s Galaxy S9 & Note 9 Will Feature Heat Pipes

Samsung will reportedly continue to use heat pipes with its 2018 major smartphone releases, according to a new report out of DigiTimes which in turn credits “sources from upstream supply chain” for the information. While also noting how suppliers of these heat pipes have already started production on the parts.
This is following on from rumors which have suggested Samsung might not include heat pipes in its upcoming phones next year. The main reason given for this is that they just are too expensive for what they are. However, due to the fundamental nature of heat pipes acting as an additional measure to stop a smartphone from overheating, some alternative form of cooling would need to be in place instead. This is where vapor chambers come in. As the report does make it clear that a number of smartphone brands are already testing out vapor chambers with a view to including them in their upcoming models. Although the report also specifies that in spite of the seemingly high interest in this alternative technology, no orders have been placed as of yet. With the suggestion being that 2019 is more likely to be the time when vapor chambers start to show up in smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy S9 won’t be a match for Apple iPhone X if these benchmarks are accurate

With the release of the iPhone X, Apple made a bold move, and it seems to be paying off. To take on this radically designed flagship phone from its arch rival, Samsung is apparently readying as many as three models of its next-generation Galaxy S handset, dubbed the Galaxy S9, that will likely be launched in the first half of 2018.

The tech world has been hit by a lot of Galaxy S9 rumours over the past few months. The speculated specs of the Galaxy S9 have been largely impressive, with the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 and Samsung’s home-grown second-generation 10nm Exynos chipset mostly driving the excitement among consumers.
There’s no doubt that the Galaxy S9 will be one of the most powerful Android smartphones in the world when it launches. But, a new leak has suggested that Samsung’s efforts still may not be enough to match the brilliance of Apple’s iPhone X.

The comparison between the iPhone X and the Galaxy S9 is based on newly leaked benchmark test results on the Geekbench website for a Samsung smartphone with the model number SM-G960F.

While the Geekbench listing doesn’t mention Galaxy S9 anywhere on the site, the model number SM-G960F is widely believed to be tied to the global version of the Galaxy S9, which is expected to feature Samsung’s new Exynos 9 Series 9810 processor. The SM-G960F handset on Geekbench is apparently powered by a new octa-core Exynos chipset and 4GB of RAM, along with Android 8.0 Oreo.

OnePlus to fix backdoor root access issue via a software patch

A few days ago, OnePlus was accused of intentionally leaving a backdoor root access (via the EngineerMode apk) on the OnePlus 5, OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T, which can be exploited to obtain root access to the devices. The company’s CEO Carl Pei responded to the issue saying that the company would look into it. Now though, the company has confirmed in a blog post that gaining root access functionality via EngineerMode apk will be removed from the aforementioned OnePlus phones through an upcoming OTA update.

In the blog post, OnePlus explains the EngineerMode apk, and states that it is a diagnostic tool, which is mainly used for “factory production line functionality testing” and after sales support. The company claims that even though the EngineerMode app grants escalated privileges using adb commands, it will not allow full root privileges to third party apps.

The post further clarifies that obtaining root access via adb is only possible through USB debugging mode turned on. This is turned off by default. It adds that obtaining root privileges will require physical access to the device. OnePlus believes it’s not a major issue, but they have promised to remove the adb root function from EngineerMode in the upcoming OTA update.

To recall, the issue started when a developer discovered that certain OnePlus phones can be rooted without even unlocking the bootloader. The developer claims that launching ‘DiagEnabled’ activity associated with the Engineering Mode app with the correct password grants root privileges to users. The ‘Engineering Mode’ is meant for factory testing devices and ensuring that they are working properly. The app is reportedly pre-installed on the OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T and the oneplus 5.

Last month, OnePlus also faced user backlash for collecting their personal data like IMEI numbers, serial numbers, app usage statistics and more. The company responded by saying that the collected data is used for improving their services and users have an option of opting out.
