Moto E5 leaked image reveals 5-inch display, rear placed fingerprint scanner

Motorola could soon reveal the Moto E5, which would be the successor to last year’s budget smartphone, the Moto E4MySmartPrice has obtained an alleged image of the upcoming device and says that it could launch on April 3, 2018, which would be a couple of months earlier than its predecessor. The company could price the Moto E5 between $120-$150 (Rs 7,500 – Rs 9,500 approx) and is also expected to introduce a Play and Plus variant.

There is not much information regarding the hardware specifications of the device, given that only an image has surfaced. As per the image, the first noticeable design reform in the Moto E5 is the placement of its fingerprint scanner. It is now seen on the rear with the Motorola logo etched on top, which is a design departure from its predecessor that sported a front-facing fingerprint scanner embedded into the home button.

The smartphone still sports a 16:9 screen display ratio with what looks like a 5-inch display, despite the fingerprint sensor being relocated to the rear. There is also a front-facing camera with an LED flash and on-screen soft navigation buttons. Both the power button and volume rocker are placed on the right side of the phone and it comes with a micro USB port at the bottom. There is also a centrally placed single camera sensor on the back with an LED flash.

The Moto E5 is expected to be powered by a MediaTek chipset, same as its predecessor and will reportedly be launched as a dual-SIM smartphone. It is touted to feature connectivity options like GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 3.5mm headphone port at the top.

Vivo X20 Plus UD With Under Display Fingerprint Sensor Listed on TENAA

Vivo X20 Plus UD with in-display fingerprint sensor has been certified by TENAA in China. The company had showcased the world’s first ready-to-produce in-display fingerprint scanning technology on the Vivo X20 Plus at CES 2018. Although the handset looks similar to the Vivo X20 Plus, it does not have a square rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. Based on the ‘UD’ nomenclature, it is expected that the smartphone will have an ‘under display’ fingerprint scanner.

In terms of specifications, the Vivo X20 Plus UD will sport a 6.43-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2160×1080 pixels, according to the Chinese certification site TENAA’s listing. The smartphone is powered by a 2.2GHz octa-core processor and it features 4GB RAM. When it comes to the camera, the Vivo X20 Plus UD sports a dual camera setup at the back, with a 12-megapixel lens and a 5-megapixel lens. On the front, the handset will feature a 12-megapixel camera.

Internal storage of the Vivo phone would be 128GB, with support for expansion up to 256GB. It will be powered by a 3800mAh battery. Connectivity features mention in the TENAA page include Bluetooth, USB support, and 4G Internet. The handset’s dimensions are said to be 165.2×80.02×7.35mm, and its weight 183.1 gram. Colour options will be Black Gold, Champagne Gold, Rose Gold, and Matte Black, the listing suggests.

The new development emerges weeks after the Chinese company announced its partnership with Synaptics to bring its native in-display fingerprint scanning technology called Clear ID. The in-display fingerprint scanning technology on the upcoming Vivo smartphone sits between the glass protection and OLED panel. According to Synaptics, the proprietary technology is as faster as alternative biometrics methods such as 3D facial recognition such as Apple’s Face ID and is highly secured, too.

Earlier, Synaptics had claimed that as many as 70 million units of in-display fingerprint sensors will be available this year. Mainly developed for thin-bezel OLED display panels with the taller-than-usual 18:9 aspect ratio, the Synaptics Clear ID sensors are mainly designed to replace the widely available fingerprint sensing solutions.

To recall, the Vivo X20 Plus UD was spotted on China’s 3C certification site earlier this month, with the UD probably implying the under display fingerprint sensor. Vivo had told Gadgets 360 at CES that it was not certain if the X20 Plus branding would be retained for the phone with under-display fingerprint sensor when it is eventually launched.

Motorola’s 2018 lineup may include an iPhone X lookalike

Someone might have just spoiled Motorola’s 2018 in a big way. Droid Lifehas posted a trio of leaks which, if accurate, hint at some big changes to the Lenovo brand’s smartphone lineup. The headliner would be the Moto X5, and it’s not hard to see why: the device reportedly includes a 5.9-inch, 18:9 aspect ratio display with an iPhone X-style notch. There’s no visible fingerprint reader, for that matter, so the X5 is either relying on face detection (the dual front cameras could help with this) or has a fingerprint reader tucked under the screen.

The X5 wouldn’t lean solely on its screen as its selling point: there would also be a “smart AI” helping out, and dual rear cameras to complement those on the front.

Not that the X would hog all the clever ideas. The Moto Z3 and Z3 Play would have tall, curved 6-inch screens but no notch (they’d be closer to the Galaxy S8). Instead, they’d rely on MotoMod support as their selling point — there would even be a 5G mod (mentioned by Moto back in December 2016) to deliver super-fast wireless, presumably without a battery life hit. There may be a third Moto Z with a Snapdragon 845 down the road.

And it wouldn’t be Motorola without updates to its rapidly burgeoning Moto G line. The G6, G6 Plus and G6 Play would bring 18:9 displays to the company’s more affordable phones (5.7 inches in the G6 and G6 Play, 5.93 inches in the G6 Plus), albeit with more familiar designs that include conventional fingerprint readers. Otherwise, they’re speed bumps. The regular G6 would use a Snapdragon 450, while at least the G6 Plus would use a Snapdragon 630. The G6 Plus would get a battery increase to 3,200mAh, and the G6 Play would be a longevity champ with a 4,000mAh power pack.

Only the G6 models have detailed specs and pricing ($240 for the G6, $330 for the Plus), and there’s no definitive launch window. The G6 makes sense for a debut at Mobile World Congress in February, but it could be months more until the other phones arrive. And we’d definitely take these leaks with a grain of salt. Whether or not the rumors are accurate, a lot can change over the course of several months. Motorola may have to scale back its ambitions or otherwise make tweaks before launch.

In both the front and back, the smartphone sports a 13-megapixel primary camera with a 2-megapixel secondary camera. The rear camera offers PDAF autofocus, apart from LED flash, in addition.
